World boxing great Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao once more delivered his message to the Filipinos the best way he can: getting the world’s attention before wishing his compatriots well in these tough times.

The southpaw pugilist from General Santos City took control of the fight from the first round to wrest the WBC lightweight crown from Mexican-American David Diaz via knockout at two minutes and 24 seconds in the ninth round of their scheduled 12-round match in Las Vegas, becoming the only Asian to bag four world titles in four different weight categories.

Why RP, home to IRRI, is now the world’s top rice importer

MANILA, Philippines—It is ironic that the Philippines, home to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and some of the world’s best agriculture schools, has become the world’s top importer of rice.

The last time the Philippines produced enough of the staple to feed its people was 1994. Since then, the Philippines has been getting rice from other countries to cover for the shortfall and to tide the country over through the lean months of July, August and September.

JOHN NERY’S too voluble on his take, when he simply means some people doubt the legitimacy” of Manny Pacquiao’s win. (Inquirer, 3/18/08) That skepticism should have been thrown Gloria Arroyo-Macapagal’s way given the way of her ascent to power in 2001 and 2004 and her continued hold on power. Did Pacquiao make such a big hullabaloo when the referee in their first fight missed on counting out Juan Manuel Marquez for a clear Pacquiao TKO victory?

The Spratly Islands

Ricky Carandang reporting:

Treason

Allow me to expound a little on a story I did for The Correspondents on February 19th.

Seven countries claim ownership of the disputed Spratly Islands , just off of Palawan . China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malsysia, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines all claim to own part or all of the Spratlys. These overlapping claims have been a source of tension over the years since the Spratlys (we Filipinos call them the Kalayaan Islands ) are believed to contain significant reserves of oil and natural gas. China was the most aggressive in pursuiung its claim. In 1999, the Philippines under President Joseph Estrada led an effort to prevent tensions by getting all the claimants to agree not to take actions to provoke other claimants.

A Pinoy’s Point of View

To all Filipinos Everywhere:

I used to think that corruption and criminality in the Philippines were caused by poverty. But recent events tell me this is not true. It is one thing to see people turn into drug addicts, prostitutes, thieves and murderers because of hunger and poverty, but what excuse do these rich, educated people have that could possibly explain their bizarre behavior? And to think I was always so relieved when petty snatchers got caught and locked away in jail because I never fully realized that the big time thieves were out there, making the laws and running our country. Can it get any worse than this?

Twenty two years ago on the Sunday of February 23, I can still remember when my church mates and I went to EDSA in support for peace to the nation. I rather abhor saying again for ousting the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos because the successor didn’t do good as well and corruption just continued at a remarkable pace, although thanks to FVR who was the greatest President of the Philippines in my generation since FEM, who actually brought us back as an emerging nation.

Kailangan mo gumamit ng credit card para magka-credit history ka, kase pag hindi ka umutang o wala kang utang, hindi ka pagkakatiwalaan ng mga kano. Pag wala kang credit card, ibig sabihin wala kang kapasidad magbayad.
